Creamline survives third-set meltdown, escapes Akari to complete semifinals spot

Creamline Cool Smashers brushed off a third-set setback and stormed into the semifinals with a 3-1 victory over the Akari Power Chargers in the PVL All-Filipino Conference play-in tournament last Tuesday at the Filoil Centre.

After surrendering the third frame despite a 2-0 lead, Creamline roared back in the fourth to complete a 25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 25-16 triumph and secure its 20th straight semifinals appearance.

Allysa Valdez came through with timely attacks and veteran composure, pouring in 20 points while adding 19 excellent digs and eight excellent receptions to steer Creamline past Akari.

The Cool Smashers were dragged into a fourth set after losing their grip in the third.

This time, however, Creamline left no room for another letdown, unleashing a 6-0 run to build a commanding 12-4 cushion in the fourth.

Bea De Leon then scored on a running kill, while a one-two dump from Kyle Negrito extended Creamline’s cushion to 23-13.

Akari, however, refused to give up easily as they saved three match points, but Grethcel Soltones failed to send her serve across the net, which sealed the deal for the Cool Smashers.

Bernadeth Pons and Pangs Panaga also contributed to Creamline with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Power Chargers, on the other hand, were led by Ivy Lacsamana and Fifi Sharma, who combined for 25 points in the losing effort.
