Rodrigo Duterte skips ICC confirmation of charges hearing

Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte did not appear in-person at the confirmation of charges hearing held at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands.

The hearing, which took place on Feb. 23-24 and 26-27 which aimed to determine whether the case against Duterte will proceed to a full trial.

According to the court, Duterte requested permission not to attend the proceedings, which was approved by the Pre-Trial Chamber under provisions of the Rome Statute.

Under the Rome Statute, the ICC can continue with hearings even if the accused chooses not to be physically present.

During the proceedings, prosecutors presented statements, speeches, and other supporting materials to substantiate allegations connected to Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.

Meanwhile, Duterte’s defense team led by Atty. Nicholas Kaufman challenged the arguments raised by the prosecution.

Multiple journalists covering the hearing stated that the absence of a former head of state reduced international media attention surrounding the proceedings.

Families of victims linked to the anti-drug campaign also expressed disappointment, saying they hoped to see Duterte’s response during the hearing.

The ICC will review the arguments and evidence from both sides before deciding whether the case will move forward to a full trial.
