Authorities on Friday shut down Davao Mighty Steel Corp. in Barangay Ilang, Davao City, following a raid that uncovered radioactive contamination and defective construction materials.
Inspectors from the National Bureau of Investigation, Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission, and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute found radioactive isotopes including Uranium-238, Thorium-228, Thorium-232, and Radium-226 within the factory.
Officials evacuated 174 factory workers to protect them from direct radiation and toxic heavy metals.
Quality tests showed half of the sampled steel failed national strength and weight standards.
Investigators also found branded rebars from the plant in collapsed schools, hospitals, and homes in Sarangani, Davao del Sur, and Davao Occidental, where forensic testing is underway.
The plant operated without nuclear safety permits or environmental clearances, according to authorities.
All operations have been stopped while officials prepare criminal charges against the owners.
