Cariaso steps down as Blackwater head coach amid commissioner’s cup struggles

Jeffrey Cariaso has stepped down as head coach of the Blackwater Bossing following a mutual decision with management, the veteran tactician announced Saturday.

Cariaso confirmed that both parties agreed to “move in different directions,” bringing an end to his tenure with the franchise he joined in 2023.

The coaching change comes in the middle of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, where Blackwater is currently struggling with a 1-4 win-loss record.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Cariaso reflected on his stint with the team, describing it as one of the most challenging assignments of his coaching career. He emphasized his commitment to professionalism and competitiveness throughout his time with the Bossing.

“I have always approached my work with that conviction, grounded in competitiveness and character,” Cariaso said. “I stand by the work we put in, the standards we upheld and the professionalism we maintained.”

Cariaso, who is also recognized as one of the PBA’s 50 Greatest Players, previously handled coaching duties for teams such as Barangay Ginebra, Alaska, and Converge before taking over Blackwater.

Reports indicate that Pat Aquino, former head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas women’s team, is expected to take over as interim’s head coach.

Cariaso expressed gratitude to team ownership and management, including Dioceldo Sy and Silliman Sy, for the opportunity to lead the squad.

“I leave with respect for the organization and wish the players and the team continued strength and success,” he said.

Blackwater has yet to release an official statement regarding the transition.
