NCR records 236 percent increase in self-harm and suicide incidents

A total of 111 incidents of self-harm were recorded by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) from January 1 to March 23 of this year — a 236 percent increase from the previous year within the same timeframe of 36 recorded cases.

According to the NCRPO, the leading reasons for these self-inflicted harm incidents are due to emotional distress, relationship issues, personal loss, and financial pressure.

The office has emphasized the need for a better understanding of the reasons for these cases and the struggles of the people who inflicted harm on themselves, noting that “Behind these numbers are individuals facing silent emotional struggles—underscoring the need for better recognition, timely intervention, and stronger community awareness.”

The NCRPO has emphasized that online environments may be a leading factor due to the dangers these platforms pose, such as harmful interactions and cyberbullying.

The NCRPO is set to strengthen its support for mental health well-being by implementing the Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO) framework, in which the office coordinates with local barangay offices to detect early signs of emotional vulnerability.

The office has also urged the public to be attentive and aware of changes in one’s behavior that may be a looming sign of emotional vulnerability.
