PH mulls Facebook ban; MSMEs brace for potential economic fallout

Amid concerns over misinformation, harmful content, online abuse, and child safety, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) considers a possible nationwide Facebook ban, raising concerns among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that depend on the platform for digital marketing and customer engagement.

The agency, an attached unit of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), is studying recommendations to block Facebook in the country, citing concerns about online abuse, misinformation, and the protection of children.

CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Renato Paraiso said the government has the capability to block the social media platform but emphasized that the proposal remains under consideration.

Meanwhile, DICT Secretary Henry Aguda described the potential Facebook ban as a “last resort.”

“Yung blocking po, ang trabaho ko po is to make sure naman na dapat last resort ‘yan. Gagawin at gagawin namin yung puwede namin gawin para mag-comply ang Meta,” Aguda said.

Malacañang has also expressed openness to studying proposals that could restrict social media and gaming platforms if they are found to pose significant risks to Filipinos, particularly children.

The agencies’ renewed scrutiny of Facebook follows concerns over the spread of fake news and harmful content, which officials say could contribute to social problems and threaten public safety.

However, a nationwide restriction could affect MSMEs that use Facebook as a low-cost platform to advertise products, communicate with customers, and expand their market reach.

According to a DAI survey of Philippine MSMEs, 55% of surveyed online businesses reported using Facebook to market to their customers, while 52% use it to communicate with customers.
